ARLEY PARISH COUNCIL

The Disappointed of Arley!

Following the 2005 renovation and refreshment of the recreational ground in New Arley the Arley Parish Council (APC) decided to erect a new, substantial fence at the rear of the playing field in January 2006.

This fence was designed to
prevent children from straying into the ditch and farmer’s field
reduce the nuisance caused by illegal motorbikes riding to and from the recreational ground and fields
limit the amount of damage caused to the farmer’s property  by, for example, vandals removing hay bales or setting alight to the crops

However, this was not to be.  Within days of the fence being erected, at a cost of £5552, it was vandalised and it has continued to be vandalised to such a point that it is of no use and is also now extremely dangerous.

Therefore, the APC have had to arrange for the fence to be professionally removed and the remaining fence given as scrap metal.

At what point will people stop vandalising and destroying things that are provided at significant cost for the enjoyment and safety of the parishioners and take pride in their villages?

In May 2006 the parishioners of New and Old Arley voted in a new Parish Council and since that time we have been working on your behalf on a number of diverse projects, detailed below is a small sample of these.

GREETINGS FROM WESLEY HALL

What a busy few weeks we have had since Christmas and Easter is almost upon us.

Easter actually started several weeks ago with Pancake Day, the first day of Lent. By then we’ve usually given up on our New Year’s Resolutions – all good intentions go out of the window! Lent gives us another chance to test our staying power, when we give things. Usually we try to give up chocolate or alcohol. The 40 days of Lent is a very long time, especially if you’re a chocoholic.

For those of you, who like me, couldn’t give anything up, there is an alternative.

Think back to Pancake Day. I’m sure many of you tossed a pancake successfully. Could we do that with our lives? Could we turn them over and   do something for the good of others? You never know, it may last longer than Lent.

When we get to Easter, we can rejoice. Not only has Jesus risen, but we are continuing with his good work.

There are many people in our villages who have turned their lives over, who continually think of ways to help others, who pray for others. Let’s support them and join them. Who knows, that Pancake Day may last all year.

“THOSE WERE THE DAYS”

“We were fortunate enough to obtain a copy of Arley News Letter from Rosemary Willetts via my daughter who was in Arley recently. I found Elaine Martin’s article very interesting also Len Horton’s on the history of Arley. Let me go back about 70 years when Mr Curtis was headmaster at Herbert Fowler other teachers as I remember were Mr Dowse ,Carter Davis--Williams---Miss Poole Miss Pitfield Miss Willet - Mrs Parker Shops in Gun Hill --Wymans --Woodward’s paper shop Plants corner store Hills -post office Hartland’s -fish shop Hudson’s and many others also of course THE GRAND picture house. Mais and I were married in 1947 at ST WILFRIDS the  incumbent was Canon King followed by Rev Artus We left Arley in 1978 although life in Canada has been good here our roots and memories are still in Arley I was very impressed that you have created a Web site for Arley. Hope that now we can get in touch with other ex Arley people who have left and wish to remember the old days. A mine of information is Dennis Macdermott [Mac] who now lives in Ansley.”

“Hi.  I'm looking for a Mr John Brookes, his last address Castle Lodge Arley. We

[If you have any information please e-mail arleynews@hotmail.com and we will pass it on.]

Gun Hill Allotment Association would like to express their sincere thanks to Fran Poole the Health Improvement Officer for NWBC, without her enthusiastic help this project would not be what it is today.  We wish her well in her new job in Rugby, and would like to remind her that there will always be apples to be collected in Autumn.

“Could the real Mr and Mrs Parkes please stand up?
We have been living in Charles Street for the last 2 Christmas’s and both years we have received a Christmas card and cheque for Mr and Mrs Parkes. This year, we have also received a card and cheque for a newborn baby for the same family. We still have these cards (for this year – last years cheque was returned to the bank) and we would like them to be given to their rightful owners – as the sender I would assume is none the wiser from last year and is still sending them to our house. If you are Mr or Mrs Parkes or know where they live now, can you please either contact Arley News or us directly at craigannedicken@tiscali.co.uk Thanks, Craig and Anne Dicken”

Allotment News

It has been a quiet couple of months on the allotment site, the cold and very wet weather have put off all but the most hardy of souls.  Now, with a hint of spring in the air and the seed catalogue’s arriving with every post, planning is underway for our second, and hopefully (the British weather permitting) much more successful growing season.

Whilst very little physical work has been in evidence on site, the committee have all been working hard to ensure that the funding bid that was applied for in 2007, was successful, and that all was in place to set work in motion as soon as this was confirmed.  Imagine our disappointment, when just before Christmas, we heard that our bid had failed. It did seem that we were going to spend yet another year without a proper roadway and drainage.  However, since then, we got confirmation on January 17th that Warwickshire County Council had managed to source funding for us, and gave us the go-ahead to appoint a contractor.

This work is scheduled to begin at the end of January, and is going to lead to a busy period on the site, with access to the existing car park being widened, and the whole area topped off with road planing’s.  The main roadway down the middle of the site will be filled and levelled, and then topped off with road planing's when the job is complete.  The plots on the left-hand side of the site can then all be levelled and provided with decent topsoil to enable these to be properly cultivated.  The aim is also to get the plot allocated for the school to be levelled and prepared, so that the children can begin to ‘grow their own’.

We are still attempting to solve the drainage problems on site, some of which will be resolved by a proper road surface being installed, other problems involve blocked drains, which Severn Trent are going to investigate with CCTV in the near future.

The new bird boxes are ready to be installed, and the good news is that all the boxes we put in last year were used - even if one was for a wasps’ nest. Wasps are still wildlife after all!

The plants ordered for the boundary hedging have arrived, and we will be planting these out as soon as the weather permits.

Once the roadway is completed, then work begins seriously on the wildlife garden and pond at the bottom of the site.  This work has been seriously impeded by the fact that no machinery could get down to this area, and we now have to make up for lost time – we have until the end of May to use the funding that was received from the BBC’s Breathing Spaces.

The Ley Group Young People’s Project

Happy New Year!!! The Ley Group has lots of exciting things happening in the next few months. The young people of New Arley have planned their programme of activities for youth club. They include: Dance workshops, cooking, Arts and crafts, a games night and many more.

The young people are hoping to do a community clean up that will take place in the park. This will be co–ordinated by the ley group and our local PCSO Simeon Hodson. The aim of the cleanup is to clean off any graffiti that is on the equipment in the park.

The young women’s project are planning a trip to Brathay Lodge in the lakes, they are planning their trip from start to finish. They have made a start by applying for the funding from the youth opportunities fund. The girls meet every Monday and are working hard to achieve their holiday.

Allan Harvey and Sarah Davies are becoming fantastic youth workers and are showing dedication for the project and the young people of the village.

The home work club in New Arley is going strong and we have a steady stream of young people every week. Although I think us workers need to brush up on our maths skills!!! The young people are extremely supportive of each other and they enjoy having the time to study. The age groups vary as does the home work! If there is anyone that has the skills to help any of the young people, for one hour a week then please can you call, Sarah Tiffany on 07971772212.

That just leaves the workers in New Arley to say thank you to the young people for a fantastic 2007, you should all be very proud of yourselves.

Local School Updates

News from Gun Hill Infant & Nursery School

With what will be an extremely short spring term, it will very difficult to fit in all the things that we need to do…………but I am very confident that it will all be done!

We are placing a strong emphasis on health and personal safety this term with lots of extra activities and opportunities being planned for the children. This included our annual visit from the Life Education Caravan which has been generously funded this year by SureStart. The children really enjoyed the opportunity to explore a different topic this year (Nursery: Caring for myself, Reception: My Wonderful Body, Year One: Great to be Me & Year Two: Feelings).

We are trying to reduce the problem all schools suffer with by our Bug Busting programme which awards children “mad hair “stickers if they have their hair checked on certain dates. Our School Nurse Team also visited school and spent time with the children talking about hair care and personal hygiene.

All our Year One children are taking part in “Kerbsafe” which is an awareness raising programme about road safety. We rely on volunteers to run this so we are really grateful to Louise & John Taberer, Lesley Myers, Sue Gittings & Jo Humpage for giving up their time.

All staff have received update training in First Aid and Fire Awareness. This, hopefully, illustrates the importance we place on the safety and welfare of everyone in school.

Curriculum work this term is exciting with Reception children visiting the local Chinese take-away and Key Stage One children creating a very difficult quiz to match themselves to their baby photographs, giving some clues in the form of riddles as part of their topic on “Change”. A visit from the Warwickshire mixed instrument ensemble was enjoyed by us all. Our Year Two children took part in an inter-school Fundamental Skills workshop organised by our local School Sports Partnership.

Extra curricular opportunities include our before-school sports club which has continued this term as has our after-school Basics Club. We are also in negotiations with Nuneaton Borough to see if we might be able to run an after school football club. SureStart are hoping to re-start the toy library for our Nursery children and their parents.

The children will be inviting their Mums to a special Mothers’ Day assembly on Friday 29th February at 2pm and everyone in the community is welcome to join us at our Easter assembly on Wednesday 19th March at 9.30am.

Ann Pipe, Head teacher

Herbert Fowler Junior School

We started the New Year and the Spring Term on 7th January with a very successful Training Day on ‘curriculum planning’, led by one of our Warwickshire Inspectors.  This has already had a marked and positive effect on our practice.

Following a Christmas Art Competition organised by Bob Robertson, a member of our Governing Body, the five lucky prize winners received quality art materials and a Saturday afternoon water colour art lesson at Ansley Reading Rooms.  The children were delighted with their very generous prizes.  Their work is on display in our entrance hall.

A group of our Year 6 pupils took part in the first round of an indoor athletics competition on 30th January.  I am delighted to report that they came first out of the five schools taking part and are now looking forward to the next round on 13th March.  We wish them lots of luck!

Other sporting activities taking place this term include multi-skills, Nuneaton Borough football coaching and cheerleading.  With the recent acquisition of a full size tennis table through the collection of Tesco vouchers, we shall shortly be running an inter-house tournament.

With all this emphasis on sport, I am proud to announce that the school has been awarded the Active mark by the DCSF.  This is valid for one year and will be reassessed at the end of 2008.

As part of their project work on the hydrosphere, Miss Gardner’s class have recently visited Barston Sewage and Water Treatment Works.  Year 6 are looking forward to visiting Hams Hall Environmental Studies Centre on 3rd March as part of their project work about rivers and mountains.

Leading up to the Easter break, we shall be taking part in the County Road Safety Quiz on 5th March and World Book Day events on 7th March – the children will be dressing up as famous book characters with lots of prizes to be won!

We are looking forward to seeing lots of our parents on Monday, 17th March at Parents’ Evening but I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Easter.

Linda Weyman, Head Teacher

A village in mourning – Part 2
A little bit of history by Len Horton

The funeral of three of the miners who had died on the previous Tuesday 29th May 1931 took place on
Sunday May 3rd. 1931.

At 2-00pm a motor lorry belonging to the colliery, beautifully adorned with daffodils, yellow narcissi, and evergreens proceeded to Hill Top, where lay the body of Sam Hicklin. The scene here was distressing as one of the mourners almost collapsed as he got into one of the sixteen private motor cars being used to convey the respective families to the churchyard.

The flower covered coffin passed through a guard of honour composed of the deceased’s workmates: Messrs G& W Edwards, J&G Wardle, C.Howard, C.Beddows, F.Harris & I. Martin.

Leaving Hill Top, the cortage proceeded to George St. where the remains of Joe Dingley were laid beside those of his comrade. So many flowers were added to the already numerous that soon the coffins were hidden from view.
From George St. the procession wound its way through the Pit Yard and past the Pit Head were the bodies had been brought to the surface a scant five days before and on to Rectory Cottages. Here the relatives of Ted Warmington were picked up and the coffin of the deceased was bought out. It was not placed on the lorry, but was borne to St. Wilfrid’s Church by relays of the deceased’s colleagues in the Warwickshire Yeomanry Band. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack, and on the top the deceased band cap and belt were placed. At the Church dense crowds of people thronged the approaches to the Church and lined the Church walk and rows of schoolchildren, representatives of local bodies and comrades of the Warwickshire Yeomanry, under Lieutenant Carton were prominent. To the solemn peal of the Church bells the coffins were met by the choir and the Rector of Arley Cannon King. At the Church gates one of the mourners collapsed and was unable to go into the church building. As the Church itself is not very large inside only the immediate mourners and the Colliery Officials etc. were admitted. These included Mr. E Knox (Managing Director of the Colliey) Mrs. Knox. Mrs.E Ransom & Mr. D’Oyley Ransom (Directors) Mr. P Turner (Secretary) Dr. Cowan (Local Doctor) Mr H Bailey (Manager Arley Colliery) & Mrs.Bailey, Mrs. King, (Rectors Wife) Mr.Wm. Johnson J.P.C.C. (Representing Warwickshire Miners Ass.) Mr. Frank Smiith (M.P. for Nuneaton) Col. Hanson (Haunchwood colliery) and Mr. S. Thomas, H.M. Inspector of Mines The three coffins were laid in the chancel and a short but very moving service in which the Bishop of Coventry (Rev. Mervyn Haigh) Cannon.M. King (Rector of Arley) and Captain’s Dack and Rolfe (Church Army) took part. The churchyard was over-run with people when the committal service was begun with the singing of the Hymn “Jesu, Lover of my Soul”.

The three coffins were laid in separate compartments in a vault that had been constructed of bricks by workmen of the Colliery and had been lined with evergreens. As the solemn words “Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust” were recited by the Rector at the graveside hardened miners were weeping unrestrainedly.

The floral tributes that were sent included a magnificent tribute from the official and workmen of Ansley Hall Colliery and was a touching example of the deep sympathy felt by the whole district. A beautiful wreath for each of the three men from the Underground Officials and Staff of the Colliery was accompanied by separate tributes from Mrs. Knox who had been affected by the tragedy very deeply’ I will not list all the other many many tributes but will say that they included comments like “As a mark of respect for four brave men” and “To Our Fallen Comrades”

I have not written much about the fourth victim but Leonard Stokes was buried on the Monday in a service attended by all the dignitaries and from my research was buried at Rushall in Staffordshire. I was speaking to Mr Gordon Statham of Sycamore Crescent about the whole tragedy and he told me that he was a nephew of the late Mr. Stokes and he reliably informs me that his uncle is buried at Aldridge which is adjacent to Rushall. I am sorry that I have not got any other details about Mr. Stokes funeral as it would have been just as moving as the funeral for the other three brave souls.

Other local Police News:

Atherstone PCSO's, working with the local Parish Council and St Michaels Church youth leader Sarah Tiffany, recently organised a graffiti clean up day on the play area at Gun Hill in New Arley.

The PCSO's made regular visits to the youth club and gained the support of helpers at the club including Sarah Davies and Alan Harvey who turned up for the cleaning campaign along with many local youngsters.  PCSO Simeon Hodson said "It was good to have backing from the community, including the local Co-Op and the Post Office who supplied them (the  work force ) with a free lunch" He went on to say "Everyone involved worked hard with the main aim of the clean up achieved.  Let’s hope this might encourage the local youngsters to keep the area cleaner"
Sergeant Roger Fildes of Atherstone police said " This is a good example of the community coming together to help local youths take responsibility and ownership of their area"

Recently, two Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators in Arley found a bag of white powder in the Devitts Green area and were suspicious of its contents. They contacted their local PCSO Simeon Hodson who later had the contents of the bag forensically tested. The results confirmed the powder was a class A controlled drug of considerable value. Sergeant Roger Fildes of Atherstone Police said “This goes to prove the value of Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators in North Warwickshire assisting the police. I am particularly pleased with the way they and PCSO Hodson worked together and would encourage this to continue" Sergeant Fildes thanked the Watch Co-ordinators for the community spirited way that they helped to protect our community.
