Editorial Welcome to the Spring ‘06 edition of Arley News. I can’t believe it’s March already; time seems to have flown by. I’m pleased to present to you another edition of Arley News with a range of new articles. This time Arley News has even reached Australia – where George Hawkes is seeking help in tracing his wife’s family history – an international presence already! A big thank you goes to the Smartwater team who have kindly donated £72.29 to the publication costs of Arley News – gratefully received. To bring Arley News to you, we rely on volunteer support. I know we write this in every edition, however, I must stress how in need we are of deliverers, especially for Old Arley – Can you spare any time to support your community? I’m pleased to welcome Ron Brown onto the Arley News team – with thanks for your valuable contribution to the team so far Ron. We are eager to receive any content items you might have: Any ideas or items you would like to see for 2006, please let me know. Have a lovely Spring and enjoy Easter, Warm regards Emily & the editorial team Arley Community Association News At the moment supporting the Parish Council to undertake Arley’s Parish Plan is the main focus of ACA’s activities. Public meetings The public meeting held in New Arley on the 9th of January was a great success. Around 65 people attended and we all learned more about what is involved in doing a Parish Plan. 25 people came forward and volunteered to help with different aspects of the plan. Around 25 people attended the meeting in Old Arley on the 19th January. A few volunteers came forward but more are needed if we are to accurately represent villager’s views and opinions. If you live in Old Arley and would like to help please contact one the people specified at the end of this article. People who attended the meetings were asked to fill in a form outlining their comments and concerns. Initial analysis suggests that concerns include: Transport, road traffic and parking The site of the Miners Welfare Hall and the need for a community building are concerns in New Arley and previous research has shown that ‘the backs’ are a concern for many households in both villages. What happens next? ACA have analysed the initial survey and passed the results, as well as the contact details of all of those who have volunteered to help, to the Parish Council. In the near future the Parish Council will hold a meeting for those who volunteered in order to decide what needs doing and how to carry it forward. Volunteers will be contacted as soon as the date and venue have been finalised. Local businesses will also be encouraged to become involved. Refreshments will be provided. Do you have skills, facilities or resources that could help? We have a particular need for: Survey design skills For more information or if you would like to become involved in the Parish Plan please call: Arley Community Association’s Annual General Meeting Local Plan Latest Following the Local Plan Inquiry held last year, North Warwickshire Borough Council has now amended the Local Plan, accepting the majority of the Planning Inspector’s recommendations, and is now consulting on the proposed modifications they have made to the plan. The public consultation period on the modified plan runs from Thursday 16th February 2006 until Friday 31st March 2006. With regards to Arley, both the Miners Welfare Site and Rectory Cottages Site have been deleted from the Plan with respect to them being developed for 100% Affordable Housing as petitioned for by the Arley Community Association. Arley Community Association is supporting this modification, but making further objection to the relevant modified policies proposed in the plan aimed at protecting community facilities in area’s such as Arley and how community consultation is taken into account when any redevelopment of such is proposed. For further Local Information contact Paul Reader on 01676 541323. ‘Cheers!’ – Wagon Load of Lime New managers of the ‘Wagon Load of Lime’ moved in to pub in Old Arley in November 2005. Peter Grimes and his son Michael are excited at the prospect of managing the pub and hope to be upgrading it over the coming months and making it into a venue for the whole parish to enjoy. Although this is Peter’s first position as a landlord, he has plenty of experience, built up over the last 10 years, as a bar/cellar man. His main job however, before taking on the Wagon was as a lorry driver. Peter has lived in the area for the last 18 years, moving here when Michael was a baby. He is looking forward to improving the venue and wants it to be a high quality village pub, the centre of village life. He is hoping to hold regular entertainment nights, including running charity nights for local organisations. Another ambition of Peter’s is to re-open the restaurant so that he can further welcome the residents of Arley and provide us with a much needed local establishment where we can stay local but enjoy a good meal – a much needed facility! Peter looks forward to meeting many of the local residents over the next few months and hopes that people will pop in to see him as the refurbishment takes shape. Keep an eye out in Arley News for forthcoming events at the Wagon Load of Lime! Want to learn more about First Aid for your Family? Church Services St. Wilfrid’s Arley and St. Michael’s Gun Hill Mother’s Day Special 27th March, 4 pm Easter Services United Procession and Communion Starting at Wesley Hall Methodist Church, Old Arley 10.15 a.m. Join us every Sunday… …. and through the week For further details, to book a baptism or wedding or if you would like me to visit please telephone the Rector Peter Allan 02476-399070 Arley Wesley Hall Methodist Church Please note the Change of Minister : Deacon Sue Fry Family Service: 2nd Sunday of the Month 10.30 am Introducing Sue Fry - Over the past few months, many people have been aware of the changes taking place within and outside Wesley Hall, as our refurbishment programme has become more evident, in particular , the ramp, which provides easier access. Another of the changes has been my arrival as minister for the church. I am a member of the Methodist Diaconal Order, a dispersed religious order and order of ministry. Since September 2001 I have been serving in Nuneaton and Atherstone Circuit and Arley has come into my care from last September, although I have been involved unofficially for rather longer. My other churches are Ryton (Bulkington), Collycroft (Bedworth), Attleborough and Hartshill. As a deacon I see my role as largely to be pastoral one, and so I spend as much time as possible with people, attempting to see at least one person from each of the 5 areas each week. You should see me around Arley quite often as our Methodist premises are used by so many community and church groups for all ages, and I do like to make contact with everyone when I can. Just look out for the bright green car! By nature, I am an enthusiast, enjoying every aspect of live, especially the privilege of ministry and of serving our Lord Jesus Christ, and greatly value the opportunities of working with my brothers and sisters of all Christian traditions. For 20 years I have been increasingly involved in the life of the Kenyan church, and, with the help of the Circuit Methodists and other friends have built one Nursery School in Kisumu, W. Kenya, and we are embarking on another. Whilst in Kenya on my twice yearly visits, I also train Sunday School teachers in the basic skills of story telling, arts and crafts, child development, visual aids and pretty much anything else I am asked to. So change has come and is coming to Wesley Hall and the Methodist Community and as we prepare for Easter and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, change should come to all of us. The season of Lent is one of those when we are challenged to examine Jesus’ life and our own, to allow him in, increasing measure so that we might know the full joy of being raised with him hi new life. This should not simply be for our sakes, but so that we might be better able to share the good news with those around us. These days, so many are searching for something to fill the god-shaped space in their lives, so why shouldn’t we help them to fill the gap with the living God as we know him in our Lord Jesus Christ. Every community needs and deserves an effective Christian presence, so let us go boldly into our villages, living out faith and proclaiming the life-changing Gospel messages. God bless you in your worship and witness. May we together “lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim until all the world (especially the Arley part of it) adore his sacred name.” Sue Fry (Deacon) Arley News reaches Australia A family research request. George Hawkes who lives in Australia is looking to trace the families of David and Eliza Knight on behalf of his wife. The Knights moved to Arley around 1902 to work at the mine. The family were still in Arley around 1935, aged about 74 living at 38 Rectory Cottages. Their son John Knight a miner married Violet living at 19 Church cottages with 2 children Arthur and Rose. George also knows so far that two of David’s daughters married a Backhouse and a Clements who were also miners. Any further clues would be appreciated. Please contact George Hawkes direct on e-mail: george.hawkes@bigpond.com or by post 25 Lilli Pilli Point road, Lilli Pilli, NSW. Australia 2229. Ring Karen on 01676 549035 Smartwater - New Arley Following the Pilot Smartwater Project undertaken in late 2003, requests were recently made to Sgt. Martyn Stephens of Warwickshire Police’s Community Safety Team regarding the current status and costs of renewal registration of the scheme. He informed us that Smartwater UK no longer charges for this and that Warwickshire Police still manage the scheme on behalf of the New Arley Residents who marked their valuables and registered with the Police accordingly. As no further fees are now due, £72.29 remains from £87.29 of voluntary donations collected from the various Smartwater Distribution Meetings held in 2003, once room hire costs of £15 were accounted for. It has been agreed by those who helped with the roll out of Smartwater that the best use of these funds now would be to assist in the funding of Arley News (this local newsletter) as it would be impracticable to return funds to their original donors. The Pilot Smartwater Project is no longer distributing Smartwater, anyone wishing to obtain further Smartwater supplies should contact Warwickshire Police Officers for the Arley Area, are PC 158 James Graham and PCSO 6037 Esther Kinch. They are based at Atherstone Police Station and can be contacted on 01827 718092, their voice mail numbers are 11507 and 16037 respectively. The Pilot Project Smartwater was supplied to the Community free of charge following funding from the Crime and Disorder Partnership, this money is no longer available. A charge is levied by Warwickshire Police for the supply of further quantities of Smartwater Anyone wanting more information with regard to starting a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme or Crime Prevention in general should also contact Warwickshire Police or visit the North Warwickshire Neighbourhood Watch Association website at www.nwnhwa.co.uk. Paul Reader & Peter Chatham. ‘Little Teds’ Keep Smiling In February, Little Teds playgroup held a ‘Teddy Bear Race Evening’ at the Wagon Load of Lime in Old Arley. The evening was to raise funds for insurance to keep the playgroup running. The evening proved to be a huge success, with the group raising £272.00 through the ‘racing’ of the Teddy Bears and a general auction of a variety of donated items, ensuring that the playgroup can continue to run for another year. ‘Little Teds’ Playgroup would like to thank the landlord of the Wagon Load of Lime, Peter Grimes and the customers, for their support and generosity in making the evening such a success. Little Teds Playgroup meet every Wednesday in term time at the Methodist Church Hall in Old Arley, 1.00pm – 2.30pm for babies and children, 0 – 5 years. Activities 4U Activities 4U is a partnership project with North Warwickshire Police and North Warwickshire Borough Council designed to address Anti Social Behaviour across North Warwickshire. The project will work in ‘hot spot’ areas around the borough with the aim of engaging young people in positive diversionary activity. The project will offer sports and games, a playstation, internet access and a DVD player for educational DVD’s through a specially kitted out van, all free of charge. The service will also encourage other young peoples agencies such as Fusion and Connexions to use the service to offer advice and support to the young people. The project will begin on April the 5th and will be visiting New Arley as one of its initial areas. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact: Local School Updates Gun Hill Infant & Nursery School During the last half term, we have had a particular focus on “Staying Safe & Keeping Healthy". This began with a visit from the Life Caravan where all the children were able to spend some time finding out about various aspects of health education, including “Caring for Myself", “My Wonderful Body” and “Feelings". Our Community Police Officer, Esther, spoke to each class about personal safety, especially “Stranger Danger” awareness. The Fire Service visited our Year One children to talk about fire safety. The Reception children also really enjoyed having the opportunity to see and sit in the fire engine. The children have been given the opportunity to attend a before school sports club, as well as our long standing after school Basic Club. These are both run by North Warwickshire Leisure Trust. We have recently received lots of exciting new equipment to use at lunchtimes to help the children stay fit as well as keeping them busy! We are looking forward to holding an “Elmer the Elephant Day” when a theatre company are visiting the school; visiting the Forest Hermitage which is a Buddhist place of worship; holding a special Mother’s Day assembly; taking part in an inter-school dance festival and celebrating the Easter festival in several ways and much, much more. Each year seems to be much more hectic and exciting at our school! Herbert Fowler Junior School Since returning to school after the Christmas and New Year break, our fist half-term of 2006 has included some noteworthy events. On the 23rd January, and NSPCC sponsored spell event was launched in school. I am delighted to announce that to date, the children have raised just over £1,000, a fantastic amount from a school with only 133 pupils! The school would like to take this opportunity to thank Arley Parish Council for their donation of £510 towards the cost of updating the school library. The money will go towards new window blinds and furniture to make the library a pleasant learning environment. Some members of the community may be aware that an inspection of our school field in October deemed it to be a high risk environment and as a consequence pupils have not been able to use the field. I am delighted to report that we have now secured the funding to have the necessary work carried out so that the field will be ploughed, levelled and seeded, weather permitting, and ready for use in September, 2006. On 9th February, we held a very successful Valentine’s Disco attended by about 80 of our children. Thanks must go to Mr George Jackson, our resident DJ! Four of our Year 6 pupils recently took part in the second round of a Countywide book quiz. They scored 26 ½ /48. We are now waiting to see whether this total will be enough to take us into the next round. We have a busy half-term ahead of us. There will be a Book Fair in school from 8th – 15th March, so the focus will be very much on reading. On 22nd March, all pupils will be taking part in an all day Indian Dance Workshop. On 29th March, school will be ‘Going for Gold’ in the Warwickshire Health Promoting School Scheme. During the Easter holidays, a group of 38 Years 5 and 6 children and 7 adults will be travelling to France for 5 days for a French language experience trip. We are looking forward to staying in a chateau and practising our French! If you want to speak to your local community police representatives, the mobile community police office timetable is as follows: 16th March 17th March 22nd March Memories of Arley Fred and Doris Whitmore have lived in New Arley for over 70 years and have a wonderful number of memories about Arley and the related area. Audrey Brown and Emily Young visited the couple to uncover a few of their memories and stories. Fred was born at 46 Gun Hill, New Arley and has lived since 1953 at 6a Ransome Street. You can see a picture of Fred as a boy behind the Gunhill residence below: Q: What are the main differences between Arley years ago and Arley today? There was more community activity years ago always something going on in the village. There was a Cinema located next to the Fir Tree which could seat 365 people, ran by Mr Vose. When the war was on, Fred and Doris recall seeing people queuing right up to the corner of George Street. The old Wagon Load of lime was located a couple of houses up from the Church in Old Arley, before the location it stands at today. There were many dances held at the Church Mission where the old parish rooms were at Hill top dances, saxophones and a band were all regular features! Arley had its own train station which today is apparently used as tea rooms. Arley used to have its own carnival every year, one year Doris was the maid of honour. There was a shop in George Street that was run by Mr and Mrs Plan as a general store items. The post office was located in George St. Opposite the hairdressers and a fish and chip shop.
